Omkareshwar/Amaleshwar/Shivapuri is one of the 12 Jyotir Linga Kshetram of Lord Shiva located in Mandata hills, Ujjain, Madhyapradesh.  This prominent temple of Lord Shiva existed from the date back to Krutha Yuga on the river banks of Narmada.   Interestingly this sacred river flows around the Mandata hills creating the outline of Pranava Mantra ‘OM’.

Emperor Mandata of Ikshvaku Dynasty was a righteous ruler underwent severe penance praying to Lord Shiva on this sacred land.
 
The legend has that Maharishi Narada visited mount Vindhyachala and highly appreciated the sanctity of Mount Meru.  After listening to Sage Narada, Mount Vindhyachala underwent severe penance and worshipped Lord Shiva and attained highly propitious stature with the presence of Lord as Omkareshwar and Amaleshwar and blessed Mount Vidhyachala with a perpetual growth.  Hence, Mount Vindhyachala assumed a huge size created impediments in the smooth functioning of Lord Surya’s movement across the universe.   Therefore one part of the universe undergone extreme heat and continuous day light, on the other hand the south part of the universe remained dark and stopped the normal functioning of the Universe.  All the Sages and deities appealed to Lord Vishnu.   In the meantime, Sage Agastya with his chaste wife Lopamudra was living in Kasi, they underwent severe austerities worshipping Lord Vishwanatha.   All the sages approached Sage Agastya and requested to stop Mount Vindhya from its outlandish growth.  Sage Agastya intervened and instructed Vindhyachala to reduce its size till he gets back from south and left Kashi sorrowfully.  Accordingly Mount Vindhyachala courteously followed the instructions of Sage Agastya and stopped its growth, but Sage Agastya never made his return to north and it resulted Mount Vindhyachala remain the same size.
 
This temple remains open from 5.00 AM to 3.50 PM in the morning and 4.15 PM to 9.35 PM evenings.
